A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: CCA President\, Zac Zaharias – climbing in Nepal\nZac will be presenting on his recent reconnaissance of Sita Chuchura (6611m) – a rarely climbed peak in the Dhaulagiri range of western Nepal. The reconnaissance is for a forthcoming summit attempt in 2023. \nThis was Zac’s first visit to this region since his successful ascent of Dhaulagiri I (8167 m) in 1997\, and he will provide some commentary on changes since that climb.

A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Matthew Clark\, Trekking and Alpine climbing in the Andes\n\nMatt has recently returned from a 2 month trip\, spent hiking and climbing in the Peruvian Andes. During the trip\, he spent a number of weeks hiking in both the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash mountain ranges to acclimatise\, before setting out to climb a number of intermediate to advanced mountains in the Cordillera Blanca. \n\n\nTrip highlights include climbing 8 major routes up to D+ in difficulty\, summiting four 6\,000m peaks and a solo ascent of the North face of Ranrapalca\, 6\,162m\, D+. \nCome along and hear Matt talk about the trip\, and why he thinks the Andes are the best mountaineering playground in the world!

A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Peter Blunt – an introduction to mountaineering in New Zealand\nPeter is a long-time CCA member with a trad climbing ethic. He has been rock climbing for 40+ years and has climbed extensively all over the world. Peter undertook initial exploration and development of the Point Perpendicular crag and has set other new routes on mostly obscure remote cliffs. He instructed and taught climbing in the ACT for 35 years in Outdoor Education and is now retired from the workforce. \nPeter will talk about his experiences of climbing and mountaineering in New Zealand\, drawing on both old and recent visits\, and including: \n\nguidance to new climbers on how to get started\, where to go\, mountaineering courses etc.\naccess to the NZ mountains and the NZ hut system\nthe New Zealand Alpine Club Inc. A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speakers: Hugh Newall & Matt Clark – ice climbing in Ouray\, Colorado\n\nHugh and Matt have just returned after a 4 week ice climbing trip to Ouray in southern Colorado\, USA. \n\n\nThey spent their time climbing in the famous Ouray Ice Park\, as well as the many back-country climbs in the area such as Bridal Veil Falls WI5/6. They also enjoyed some back-country touring. Altogether they clocked up around 100 pitches and 3\,000m of ice climbing! \n\n\nCome along and learn some insights into the mysterious world of climbing frozen waterfalls.

DESCRIPTION:Our first event for the year is a special event – a combined General Meeting at Mont Adventure Equipment and an opportunity to hear from Andy King representing DMM and Edelrid. \nThe evening will kick off with a short session by the CCA Vice-President\, Brian Mattick\, who will outline issues and events that the CCA is currently engaged in such as cliff access\, bolting and cliff-care at Booroomba Rocks. After the information session\, there will be an opportunity for members and guests to socialise and buy any gear. Mont will be doing a one-night-only super-duper specials on selected DMM hardware and Edelrid ‘biners. \nThe information session will be followed by our guest speaker presentation\, given tonight by Andy King. \nMont will be giving away a lucky-door-prize of a 60m Edelrid Taipan rope valued at $279.95. The Taipan is a great ecological choice because it is made of high-quality left-over yarns from other productions. \nAll welcome. Please bring along family and friends. You will be able to join the CCA on the night ($20 per year or $50 for three years) if you want to take advantage of your CCA special 20% discount on Mont gear. \nGuest speaker: Andy King\nAndy is a rock and ice climber with extensive time logged in the Warrumbungles\, Wolgan Valley and Blue Mountains. He has also spent months and months on end\, ice and mixed climbing in NZ. Just for fun\, Andy spent a month doing some Winter speed ascents in Norway. \nAndy will talk about some of his adventures as well as about DMM and Edelrid – two of the truly great global climbing brands. DMM are celebrating 40 years of making classy gear in their Welsh foundry. Edelrid have developed some new revolutionary rope technology that is truly game-changing.

A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Rick Agnew – 2019 K2 attempt\nCanberran alpine mountaineer\, Rick Agnew\, will talk on his pre-COVID-19 attempt of the world’s second highest mountain – K2. \nRick’s high-altitude pursuits have taken him across the world for over 40 years. He has trekked\, climbed\, guided and/or co-guided in Australia\, Africa\, north\, central and southern America\, Nepal\, Tibet\, Pakistan\, New Zealand\, Russia and Antarctica. \nRick has climbed on four 8000ers – Everest\, K2\, Manaslu and Shishapangma. He is the oldest Australian to have climbed the Seven Summits (the highest mountains on each continent). He was well on his way to completing the volcano seven summits\, and working his way towards completing a 2nd Seven Summits\, when the COVID-19 pandemic halted overseas travel (amongst other things). \nAs a true consultant\, Rick is an eloquent presenter. A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Nic Bendeli – Two Alaska-Yukon Giants\nA presentation by Nic Bendeli on attempts to climb two giants in the south-west Alaska/Yukon border. The climbs were undertaken by a small group\, over two seasons (2002/2003)\, using mountaineering and ski mountaineering styles to summit. A world record was set from Mount Saint Elias. \nMount Saint Elias (also designated Boundary Peak 186)\, is the second-highest mountain in both Canada and the United States and stands on the Yukon-Alaska border about 42km southwest of Mount Logan. It is the highest mountain in Canada and is notable for its immense vertical relief. Its summit rises 5\,489m vertically in just 16km horizontal distance from the head of Taan Fjord\, off Icy Bay (Wikipedia) \nMount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada\, and the second-highest peak in North America after Denali. Mount Logan is located in the Saint Elias Mountains within Kluane National Park Reserve in southwestern Yukon\, and is less than 40 kilometres north of the Yukon–Alaska border. Due to active tectonic uplifting\, Mount Logan is still rising in height. Climbing The Nose was the adventure of a lifetime for the trio. DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: Penny Brothers\nTwin summits: highs and lows of a bifurcated climbing career\nPenny Brothers’ formative years as a climber were spent in New Zealand\, the USA\, the Himalayas and even in Australia\, where she completed rock and alpine ascents including Yosemite big walls and\, in 1980\, the first ascent of Bhrigupanth (6770 m) in the Garwhal Himalaya as part of a women’s team. She then had an unplanned hiatus from climbing while tending to her family and an academic career at the University of Auckland. In recent years she had an equally unplanned return to climbing\, with ascents in New Zealand\, Peru\, Patagonia\, and even in the ACT where she has just taken a job at The Australian National University. She served as President of the New Zealand Alpine Club in 2016-2017. \nTonight\, Penny will talk about her early years and then strategies for successful “crevasse rescue”: climbing out of the middle-aged abyss.

Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speakers: Ken Baldwin and Huw Kingston\nKen Baldwin – Red wine\, rosti and hard pack\nThe classic Haute Route one-week traverse of the French\, Swiss and Italian Alps from Chamonix to Zermatt is every ski-mountaineer’s dream – and the magnificent scenery is just one of the many highlights.  Huge ascents of over 1\,000m in a day lead to even bigger descents – including one 2\,200m downhill run down to Zermatt – the equivalent of Mt Kosciuszko summit to the sea.  The catered réfuges provided excellent cuisine after a hard day\, washed down with beer and wine.  The perfect Bluebird weather for 8 days made for great photography\, but the huge storm that followed led to a disaster near the highest point that saw 7 skiers perish overnight.  A reminder that any adventure in the high mountains should be undertaken with the utmost respect of the environment. \nHuw Kingston – Vodka\, slushies and powder\nWith a bottle of Shohona in hand\, Huw Kingston will tell tales from his ski expedition to the Fann Mountains in Tajikistan in Central Asia. Earlier this year\, Huw and his three companions failed miserably to ascend the highest peaks but succeeded magnificently in making the first ski traverse of this stunning range that runs up to 5\,500 metres. Expect acts of barberism (yes\, correct spelling…..) on the streets of Tajikistan\, plumbing the hell of the deepest\, sloppiest snow on earth and rejoicing in soft\, soft powder.

DESCRIPTION:We will have a short meeting for the election of CCA office bearers for 2018/2019 and a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: Australian mountaineer and Antarctic explorer\, Damien Gildea\nDamien Gildea is an Australian mountaineer and Antarctic explorer who has climbed extensively in Antarctica\, Nepal\, Tibet\, Pakistan\, Bolivia\, Alaska\, New Zealand and elsewhere. Tonight he will talk about the history of climbing in Antarctica and give an overview of the various mountain areas. \nDamien has led eight expeditions to the high mountains of Antarctica and two ski expedition to the South Pole.  In 2006\, the United States Geological Survey named the Gildea Glacier\, on the Vinson Massif\, in recognition of Damien’s exploration and mapping in the Sentinel Range. \nDamien has been the Antarctic correspondent for the American Alpine Journal since 1999 and\, in addition to Mountaineering in Antarctica: Climbing in the Frozen South (2010)\, he published The Antarctic Mountaineering Chronology (1998). When not on expeditions he lives in Goulburn\, NSW. \nCopies of Mountaineering in Antarctica: Climbing in the Frozen South will be available for sale at the meeting\, at a special CCA members’ price of $30.

DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: professional rock climber\, personal trainer and sports coach\, Duncan Brown – “Obsession”\n \nDetermination becomes obsession\, and then it becomes all that matters. \nDuncan will share how obsession\, sometimes with things proud and grand\, and sometimes with things comically trivial\, has shaped his climbing and his life over the years and led him to become the climber he is today – still as obsessed as the day he started. \nDuncan is a personal trainer and sports coach. He has over a decade of experience coaching swimming\, gymnastics\, trampoline and rock climbing\, as well as being a professional rock climber. He currently lives in Canberra\, Australia\, and conducts personal training\, group classes and private climbing coaching in the world class bouldering and training facilities at BlocHaus Bouldering Gym in Canberra. He is the founder of Athlete By Choice\, a locally-grown company which provides coaching and training programs for climbing and other outdoor sports. \nDuncan is also the training writer for Vertical Life Magazine and has written training and climbing articles for many publications both in Australia and around the world.

DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: CCA President\, Zac Zaharias\nZac recently returned from his third expedition to Mera Peak (6\,476m) in Nepal and crossing the Amphu Lapcha Pass. He and his team had a successful trip with 5 of the 8 team members reaching the summit\, and all team members reaching 6\,200m. Mera Peak\, while technically easy climbing\, is very high and has one of the most amazing vistas from the summit where you can see five 8\,000 metre peaks.

The expedition was marred by Armando suffering severe frost bite to both hands and feet\, and his life came to a complete stop as he recovered from his injuries; in the process of losing his fingers and toes\, he also lost his livelihood. \nThis is Armando’s story of survival and the long road to recovery to what he is now. This includes self-guided ascents of Mont Blanc (4810m)\, Breithorn (4164m) and Allalinhorn (4027m)\, as well as some of the world’s best vie ferrate such as the huge west wall of Tofana de Rozes and the Via delle Bocchette Centrali.

Source: Wikipedia) \n\nCome and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: Dr Jim Duff\nDr Jim Duff \nDr Jim Duff is a Doctor and experienced mountaineer who\, along with Dr Charles Clarke\, accompanied Hamish MacInnes\, Chris Bonington\, Dougal Haston\, Doug Scott\, Mick Burke\, Nick Estcourt and others on the 1975 British Mount Everest Southwest Face expedition. This was the first expedition to successfully climb Mount Everest by ascending one of its faces. \nJim was a member of many of the British Himalayan expeditions in the 1970s and 80s that were at the forefront of climbing new routes amongst the Himalayan giants. Nowadays\, Jim acts as Medical Advisor for numerous expedition and wilderness first aid courses. He has over 30 years’ experience in climbing\, trekking and teaching wilderness medicine. He has been a volunteer doctor for the Himalayan Rescue Association at Pheriche and Manang rescue posts\, has been on many Himalayan expeditions\, and is also a keen sailor. Jim is the founder of the International Porter Protection Group and author of numerous articles on travel and medical matters. DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speaker: Matt Rogerson\nIn 2000\, Matt Rogerson\, Stu Davies\, Robb Clifton and Tim Curtis made the third ascent of Mawson’s Peak\, one of Australia’s highest\, most inaccessible and wildest mountains. At 2\,745m high\, the active volcano rises from the depths of the Southern Ocean to form Heard Island – one of Australia’s sub-antarctic territories. \nThe first ascent of the mountain came in 1965\, in an Australian expedition led by the great Bill Tilman and Warwick Deacock\, and it was in this tradition that the Army Alpine Association launched their attempt. SUMMARY:CCA General Meeting / Climbing in the Dolomites
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nGuest speakers: CCA members Jack Pezzey\, Brian Mattick and Ben Freyens\nJack\, Brian and Ben will show slides of their recent\, separate trips to the Dolomites\, a world-famous\, very accessible region of spectacular limestone peaks in NE Italy.  At most two hours’ walk from your car reaches a huge range of climbing\, from 3 to 33 pitches\, with no altitude problems\, usually no snow\, often stunningly exposed\, and all grades from via ferratas and mid-teen trads (what we climbed) to super hard/long routes.  With accessibility come typical Dolomite features such as howling motorbikes and sportscars\, beer on summits and cable-car descents; less typically\, we also met an ankle-breaking crevasse\, a descent in a kilometre-long tunnel and a karabiner-shaped thigh-branding!   \nPictured below is the Sassolungo group; the isolated spire on the middle peak has a thrilling knife-edge ridge at just grade 13. \nSassolungo (3\,181m) is the highest mountain of the Sella Group in the western Dolomites in South Tyrol\, Italy. The name translates to “long peak” / “long rock”. Further summits are the Punta Grohmann\, Torre Innerkofler\, Dente\, Sassopiatto and Cinque Dita. The Sassolungo mountain range could be considered the borderline between the Val Gardena and Val di Fassa.
