SUMMARY:Farewell Party & Closure of Canberra Indoor Rockclimbing Gym
DESCRIPTION:We don’t want it to happen… but happen it will. \nThere will be laughter\, tears\, climbs\, familiar faces\, sausages\, nibbles\, hugs (and some more tears). \nCome and say goodbye to our all-time favourite hang-out in Canberra. Let’s climb together one last time! \nPlease bring a plate to share. \nGoFundMe appeal for the cost of CIRC deconstruction\nThe process of dismantling the gym and fulfilling CIRC’s tenancy commitments comes with significant costs\, and the CIRC staff kindly ask for your support as they navigate this transition. \nCIRC will cease operations on 30 January\, 2025\, and must vacate the premises by 28 February\, 2025. Starting on 31 January\, they will begin removing holds and features\, and contractors will begin their work on 3 February\, 2025. \nAny contributions\, big or small\, to help CIRC manage these costs during this challenging time would be greatly appreciated. SUMMARY:Namadgi National Park 40th Anniversary – A Rock Climber's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:On 3 October 2024\, Namadgi National Park will mark the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Namadgi as a National Park. The declaration on 3 October 1984 followed a decades-long campaign by the ACT National Parks Association. The ACT Parks and Conservation Service (PCS) and ACT National Parks Association (NPA) will celebrate the anniversary through a series of activities which will be held from 30 September 2024 until 6 October 2024 (the second week of the school holidays) and hosted by PCS and Namadgi stakeholders. \nThe CCA has long been part of Namadgi’s story\, including the Namdgi National Park and the previous Gudgenby Reserve\, and has been invited to help PCS celebrate. \nWe will deliver a presentation\, with many accompanying photos\, on the history of rock-climbing in Namadgi National Park that stretches back over 50 years. The presentation will be delivered by long-time CCA member Paul Daniel\, who has a long history of climbing in the area pre-Namadgi NP and is also a pioneer climber putting up new routes. After the presentation there will be a show and tell of rock-climbing equipment and how it has evolved over the years. \nThis event is free but bookings are required: \nBookings \nDownload the 40th Anniversary Activities calendar (PDF 518KB)

SUMMARY:The art and science of trad lead climbing
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to learn how to lead “trad” climbs and not known how to start? \nTraditional climbing\, or trad climbing\, is a style of rock climbing in which a climber places all gear required to protect against falls\, and removes it when a pitch is complete. \nThis is a 1-day introductory traditional lead climbing course run by CCA in conjunction with K7 Adventures. The course is a mix of theory and practical activities to introduce the foundation skills for traditional climbing\, such as: \n\nclimbing knots\nmodern traditional climbing equipment\nbelaying leaders and seconds\nsetting up anchors\nplacing and removing protective gear\nkeeping yourself (and others) safe at the crag.\n\nThe course is being run by qualified\, experienced Outdoor Recreation Industry instructors from CCA and K7 Adventures. \nYou will be provided with a gear list for this activity and there will be homework to complete before the course; homework will take about 60 minutes. \nThe course will take place at White Rocks\, a small limestone crag located on the Queanbeyan River within 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of the Canberra CBD. \nParticipant numbers are limited to 3-6 climbers. \nTrad climbing gear

SUMMARY:The Dawn Wall - special CCA screening
DESCRIPTION:CCA has arranged a special screening of The Dawn Wall movie for its members and their family and friends. This special screening is scheduled for the day before the official public screening. \nThe Dawn Wall\nImages from the Dawn Wall\, January 2015\, shot by Bligh Gillies of Corey Rich Productions in Yosemite National Park\, California. \nIn January 2015\, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb the Dawn Wall of El Capitan\, a seemingly impossible 3\,000-foot rock face in Yosemite National Park\, California. The pair lived on the sheer vertical cliff for weeks\, igniting a frenzy of global media attention. \nBut for Tommy Caldwell\, the Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22\, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after\, he lost his index finger in an accident but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart\, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing the Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession\, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practising their route. On the final attempt\, with the world watching\, Caldwell is faced with a moment of truth. Should he abandon his partner to fulfil his ultimate dream\, or risk his own success for the sake of their friendship? \nImages from the Dawn Wall\, January 2015\, shot by Bligh Gillies of Corey Rich Productions in Yosemite National Park\, California. \nMore than just a climbing movie\, The Dawn Wall is an epic and inspirational story that will take you into the hearts and minds of the protagonists and is to be enjoyed by all. \n\nWinner of The Audience Award at South By Southwest\nAccepted into the Melbourne International Film Festival\nDescribed by Variety Magazine as “A must-see”\n100% on Rotten Tomatoes!\n\n  \n\nPitch 15\, rated 5.14d\, of the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park gave Kevin Jorgeson the most difficulty during his and Tommy Caldwell’s historic first free ascent of the Dawn Wall (VI 5.14d) on January 14\, 2015. \nTickets\nTickets are limited\, so you will need to book and pay in advance. \nPrices are \n\n$20 CCA members\n$22 students\n$25 family and friends of CCA members\n\nBooking process\n\nEmail the booking officer\, Brian Mattick (see details below) with the number and type (member\, student or family/friend) of tickets you need.\nPay via direct deposit to the CCA bank account:\n\nBank: Serviceone Credit Union \nBSB: 801009 \nAccount: 1064291 \nPlease put your full name in the reference box on your bank’s online payment form. SUMMARY:Booroomba 50th Anniversary Celebration: 1966 - 2016
DESCRIPTION:The first climb recorded at Booroomba Rocks was made in January 1966 by Peter Aitchison. The climb\, named Aitchison’s Needle was graded at 13 and is a small pinnacle just off the South Buttress. \nPeter Aitchison at the top of the Bugaboos in British Columbia\, circa 1992. \nThe CCA is proud to announce a celebration of 50 years of climbing at Booroomba Rocks; the night promises to be a great evening with displays of photos and memorabilia from that era. As well\, a number of climbers who made many first ascents over the last 50 years will be present to tell some great yarns. \nFinger food will be provided on arrival and drinks can be purchased at the bar. Meals can be purchased after the event. \nPlease RSVP to Tony Wood (see details below) before Monday 22nd August\, including how many will be attending (for catering purposes). Tony\, of course\, was one of the early pioneers of climbing at Booroomba Rocks. \nBooroomba Rocks – some 1st ascensionists (August 2016) \nSome participants of the Booroomba 50th Anniversary celebrations
