October Abseil and Self-Rescue Skills Workshop
October Abseil and Self‑Rescue Skills Workshop
Essential competencies for all independent climbers
Venue
Namadgi National Park – Full details will be provided to confirmed participants.
Timing and Meeting Point
The workshop will commence at 0830 at the designated meeting point (approximately 40 minutes’ drive from Canberra City).
Purpose
This workshop aims to facilitate the sharing of expertise and practical interchange on abseiling and self‑rescue techniques, equipment, and best practice.
The day will progress in a structured sequence, beginning with foundational abseiling skills and advancing to introductory self‑rescue techniques. Participants are expected to have at least a basic sport‑climbing background, though minimal abseiling experience is anticipated.
Self‑rescue simulations require heightened attention to safety, as participants may be applying unfamiliar techniques in more demanding scenarios. All vertical activities will utilise backup systems where appropriate, and participants will operate in a buddy‑check framework to ensure mutual safety. All activities will be undertaken within a “challenge by choice” environment, allowing individuals to opt out of any component at their discretion.
Participation
This workshop is open to CCA members who are competent, experienced, and independent climbers.
What to Bring
Participants must bring their own climbing equipment. All gear MUST be in serviceable condition, and ropes, harnesses, helmets, and slings MUST be less than 10 years old. All equipment must be purpose‑designed and certified for climbing. Gear will be inspected prior to activities.
Please bring at least one short and one long prusik, as well as an ATC‑style belay device. Please bring with you what you'd normally use sport climbing.
Participants must also bring sufficient food and drinking water for the day and be prepared for both cold and warm conditions.
Transportation
Carpooling assistance will be offered for those interested; however, final arrangements will need to be coordinated between individuals. Members travelling in another participant’s vehicle are expected to contribute to fuel costs.
Inquiries
Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of the Trip Leader during the registration process.
