SUMMARY:Blue Lake climbing weekend 2024
DESCRIPTION:Blue Lake\, in Kosciuszko National Park\, NSW\, is a rare and beautiful cirque lake which has some of the clearest waters of any Australian lake. Granite cliffs of up to 55m overlook the west side of Blue Lake\, providing some wonderful traditional climbing and the only alpine climbing area in Australia. \nParticipation\nCCA holds this climbing weekend annually. The event is open to all current CCA members\, and please note that you cannot join CCA on the day of the event (* see note about CCA membership below). \nThis is a climbing camp and we don’t provide instruction; we expect everybody to be self-sufficient climbers. However\, for those that are a little rusty\, there are opportunities to tie in to the other end of the rope and follow more experienced climbers up on some of the easy single-pitch classics on Elephant Buttress. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register with the event coordinator\, Zac Zaharias (details below). He will then send you details including the camping location and possible car pooling options. \n(* Note about CCA membership: you can only join CCA via our website\, and it takes about a month to receive your member’s card after you submit the membership application form on-line and pay the membership fee) \nWhat to bring\nYou will need to be a self-sufficient camper and climber for the entire weekend. We don’t provide any gear for this weekend’s event. \nThe crag is a 4 km trek from the carpark at Charlotte Pass\, and is a steady uphill for most of the way. You will need to walk with all your climbing and camping gear\, from the car park  to where we camp above the tree line. Day climbing is also possible by walking the 4 km trek from the car park to the cliffs with just your climbing gear. \nClimbing routes\nBlue Lake climbing guide  Blue Lake image gallery

SUMMARY:CCA General Meeting / guest speaker Prof. Ken Baldwin
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nDinner is available from The Limestone Kitchen at the Ainslie Football Club\, providing a great chance to relax and socialise with other CCA members before the meeting starts at 7.30pm. A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Prof. Ken Baldwin – The 2023 Gorak Himal (Nepal) exploratory expedition and its roots in the ANUMC\nIn May this year\, with Tim Macartney-Snape and a group of friends from previous expeditions\, we explored the remote valleys and high passes of far NW Nepal in the Gorak Himal. With an eye for the many unclimbed 6-7\,000m peaks in that part of the Himalaya\, we traversed regions that had not been travelled by other expeditions\, passing only small hamlets with summer yak and goat herders over the three weeks. \nThe presentation will put this expedition in the context of other expeditions that arose out of the ground-breaking 1978 ANU Mountaineering Club Himalayan Expedition to Dunagiri\, and discuss rekindling the links between the CCA and the ANUMC. \nKen Baldwin is an Emeritus Professor at ANU whose main focus is on advancing the energy transition\, particularly for Australia’s export future in the region. A brief summary of his ANUMC connections are as follows: \n\n1974-1977 ANUMC undergraduate member\n1978 Secretary and member\, ANUMC Himalayan Expedition to Dunagiri (7\,066m)\, India\n1980’s ANUMC committee member and President – upgraded old ANU Sport brick climbing wall to include rock holds and cracks\n1988 Member\, Australian Baruntse Expedition (7\,128m)\, Nepal\n1990 ANUMC host and international judge for the Oceania Cup – the first climbing competition between Australia and New Zealand\n1991 Built new ANUMC climbing wall with interchangeable holds and overhanging routes\n2010 Member\, Yangma Expedition\, Nepal\n2023 Member\, exploratory expedition to Gorak Himal\, Nepal\n\nKen Baldwin in the Gorak Himal\, far NW Nepal

SUMMARY:CCA General Meeting / guest speaker Peter Cocker
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nDinner is available from The Limestone Kitchen at the Ainslie Football Club\, providing a great chance to relax and socialise with other CCA members before the meeting starts at 7.30pm. A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nGuest speaker: Peter Cocker\nPeter Cocker\, mountaineer and storyteller\, and founder of K7 Adventures\, grew up in England and discovered his passion for rock climbing as a teenager. Every day he’d go climbing on his own in the Lakes District rain or shine\, often coming home soaked but happy as only those who have found their purpose in life can be. \nPeter is 80-something years old now\, and is still the inspiration behind K7 although nowadays he employs others to do the hard work of guiding outdoor adventurists. His contribution to the world of mountaineering is detailed in Chapter 6: Upwardly mobile young men of Will Steffen’s book “Himalayan Dreaming: Australian Mountaineering in the Great Ranges of Asia\, 1922-1990” (ANU Press\, 2017). \nPeter will talk about the early days and evolution of climbing at Booroomba Rocks\, where there was a simultaneous\, spontaneous influx of granite and crack climbers from the UK who found themselves all in Canberra. He will also talk about the local land jurisdiction.

SUMMARY:CCA General Meeting / guest speaker – Matt Clark
DESCRIPTION:Come and hear a rundown of the CCA’s recent activities plus general climbing news and points of interest\, followed by our guest speaker presentation. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nDinner is available from The Limestone Kitchen at the Ainslie Football Club\, providing a great chance to relax and socialise with other CCA members before the AGM starts at 7.00pm. A table in the name of CCA is booked for 6pm. \nWe also have a guest for dinner – Wyatt Rayna – who is a history Honours student at The Australian National University and is interested in the relationship between the ANUMC and the Australian Army Alpine Club. This relationship includes\, of course\, the collaboration between the 1988 Baruntse Expedition (comprising members of the ANUMC) and the 1988 Australian Bicentennial Everest Expedition (comprising members of the AAAC). So if any club member would like to share stories about club history with Wyatt\, that would be greatly appreciated. \nGuest speaker: Matt Clark – trekking and climbing in Nepal’s Khumbu region\nMatt spent 8 weeks during last year’s Spring\, trekking and then climbing in the famous Khumbu region of Nepal. \nCome along and hear Matt’s thoughts on Nepal\, and how to trek and climb mostly solo and unsupported\, whilst on a small budget. \nHighlights include trekking the 3 passes\, climbing on the beautiful and deserted 6\,400m peak of Cholatse\, and sumitting Ama Dablam before the crowds arrived. We even have a surprise unexplored crag that might just be one of the highest rock climbing crags in the world\, at over 5\,000m!

SUMMARY:Introductory Climbing Day – Booroomba Rocks
DESCRIPTION:Our popular introductory climbing day at Booroomba Rocks\, Namadgi National Park\, is a great way for newer CCA members who are first-time climbers at Booroomba to enjoy the delights of the classic trad climbs at the Booroomba crag. It is also a great opportunity for indoor climbers to experience the joys of outdoor and trad climbing. \nYou will be led up a selection of classic routes at Booroomba Rocks\, by experienced CCA members; grades will depend on climbers and leaders. \nParticipation\nParticipants of any experience are welcome; the focus for the day is to provide an informative atmosphere. \nThe numbers who can participate will depend on how many CCA leaders we have\, and we aim for a ratio of one leader/guide for a maximum of two participants\, so it’s first in – best dressed!! \nYou will need to join CCA on the day if you are not a member ($20 for one year or $50 for three years)\, and all participants will need to sign the CCA Activity Waiver (PDF 75KB) before attending. \nPlease register your interest with the coordinator\, Zac Zaharias (see details below). \nWhat to bring\nYou will need to bring your personal climbing gear (climbing shoes\, chalk bag\, harness and helmet) plus food and water for the day. A water bottle that you can attach to your harness comes in very handy\, as most climbs at Booroomba Rocks are multi-pitch. Many of the climbs are in full sun for most of the day so some form of sun protection is a good idea. \nMeeting time and location\nWe will meet at the Booroomba Rocks car park at 9am for introductions and to organise climbing parties. To get to the car park\, drive up Apollo Road to about 1km before the Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station. Turn right onto the gravel road (it’s signposted) and follow this to the end\, about 3 km. \n  \nBooroomba Rocks image gallery   Booroomba Rocks climbing guide \n  \nVomit (17) – Booroomba Rocks\, South Buttress

SUMMARY:CCA General Meeting (AGM) / guest speakers Caitlin Horan & Peter Blunt
DESCRIPTION:As COVID-19 restrictions are beginning to ease a bit\, we are going to run our first General Meeting of the year! This meeting will also be our AGM\, so we will include election of CCA office bearers for 2020/2021 and a rundown of the CCA’s activities throughout this year\, as well as general climbing news and points of interest. The meeting will be followed by our guest speaker presentation\, as usual. \nCCA members and non-members are welcome. \nPlease note the change in our usual meeting venue and start time (see details below). \nGuest speaker: Caitlin Horan & Peter Blunt\nIn September 2019\, local climbers Cait Horan\, Greg Fisher\, and Peter Blunt took their 90 combined years of climbing experience to the most famous big wall in the world\, El Capitan. Climbing The Nose was the adventure of a lifetime for the trio. Four nights on the wall and only a few hours of sleep here and there\, 28 spectacular pitches and all the big wall antics. \nThe team will share with us tonight some of the pain and the glory of this epic journey. \nPeter Blunt\, Cait Horan and Greg Fisher at the top of their climb of the Nose on El Capitan\, September 2019.

SUMMARY:Climbing Day at Gibraltar Peak
DESCRIPTION:Gibraltar Peak and surrounds are a multi-level maze of boulders that offer some fine climbing. Most climbs are single-pitch and many are fully bolted\, while others are a mixture of bolts and natural gear. Many of the climbs are in the sun for at least part of the day\, making this a great place for a sunny winter’s day. \nParticipation\nCCA will provide a limited amount of basic instruction and top rope climbing if there are enough volunteer leaders; please check with the coordinator (see details below). Experienced climbers just need to register with the coordinator and you can then do your own thing. \nYou will need to join CCA on the day if you are not a member ($20 for one year or $50 for three years)\, and all participants will need to sign the CCA Activity Waiver (PDF 75KB) before attending. \nParticipant numbers will be strictly limited to 20 so we don’t exceed the current restrictions for an outdoor gathering. Please register your interest with the coordinator\, Zac Zaharias (see details below). \nWhat to bring\nYou will need to bring your personal climbing gear (climbing shoes\, chalk bag\, harness and helmet) as a minimum\, as we don’t have Club gear to loan out. You will also need food\, water and sunscreen for the day. \nMeeting time and location\nThe main outcrop of the Gibraltar Rocks is prominent and lies at the end of a ridge overlooking Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. You can get there from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve by following the marked fire trail. Alternatively\, there are several steep\, unmarked fire trails on the south side of the ridge (off Corin Dam Road) that can be walked up. \nNail Biter Spike (16) – Gibraltar Rocks \nClimbing routes\nthecrag.com describes Gibraltar Peak climbing as varied\, with lots of slabs\, a few great arêtes and some stellar cracks. 123 individual routes are listed.

SUMMARY:Blue Lake climbing weekend 2020
DESCRIPTION:Blue Lake in Kosciuszko National Park\, NSW\, is a rare and beautiful cirque lake which has some of the clearest waters of any Australian lake. Granite cliffs of up to 55m overlook the west side of Blue Lake\, providing some wonderful traditional climbing and the only alpine climbing area in Australia. \nCCA holds this climbing weekend annually. It is open to all CCA members and to non-members who join CCA ($20 for one year or $50 for three years) at the beginning of the weekend. All participants will also need to sign a CCA Activity Waiver (PDF 75KB) before the weekend. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register with the event coordinator\, Zac Zaharias (details below). He will then send you details including the camping location and possible car pooling options. \nPlease note: \n\nthis is a climbing camp and we don’t provide instruction; we expect everybody to be self-sufficient climbers and campers. However\, for those that are a little rusty\, there are opportunities to tie in to the other end of the rope and follow up on some of the easy single-pitch classics on Elephant Buttress.\nyou will need to walk 4 km with your climbing and camping gear\, from the car park at Charlotte Pass to where we camp above the tree line. Day climbing is also possible by doing the 4 km treck from the car park to the cliffs with just your climbing gear.\n\nBlue Lake image gallery  Blue Lake climbing guide\n  \nTurdus – Blue Lake

\nParticipation\nParticipants of any experience are welcome. The numbers who can participate will depend on how many CCA leaders we have\, and we aim for a ratio of one leader/guide for a maximum of two participants\, so it’s first in – best dressed!! Registrations open from 24 April 2019.

\nCCA holds this annual climbing weekend\, which is open to all CCA members and to non-members who join CCA ($20 for one year or $50 for three years) at the beginning of the weekend. All participants will also need to sign a CCA Activity Waiver (PDF 75KB) before the weekend. \nIf you are interested in attending\, please register with the event coordinator\, Zac Zaharias (details below). He will then send you details including the camping location and possible car pooling options. \n» visit the Blue Lake image gallery \n» see routes and climbing guides for Blue Lake
