Climbing around Canberra
The ACT has some of the best granite climbing in Australia. ACT granite has outstanding frictional properties and to climb it requires precise footwork, balance and often some boldness. Much of the climbing here is traditional and requires natural protection. However, there is also plenty of sport climbing to be enjoyed as well as some difficult aid routes. There is also climbing on other rock types such as rhyolite, limestone and sandstone that is nearby to the ACT.
Mt Coree and Red Rocks offer exciting sport climbing on rhyolite). The ACT is only 1 1/2 hours’ drive from the limestone of Bungonia Gorge and sandstone areas of the NSW Southern Highlands.
The ACT is also close to the Snowy Mountains which offer excellent granite climbing in summer as well as snow and ice climbing in winter.
